I cannot say enough about our stay at the Volcano Lodge and Springs. We booked it because the rainy season rates were hard to pass up and because 95% of previous guests rated it Excellent. The room rates were so low that I wondered if the ratings could be true...but I have never had more good things to share about a hotel experience! We stayed in a superior room with an amazing view of Arenal from our porch. The property is designed so that the view from your patio makes you feel like you are at a private villa. All we saw before us was Arenal and lush vegetation. There were people next to us but we never saw or heard them. You couldn't even see where the cars were parked. It was almost total solitude. The room was attractive and clean. The beds were comfortable. The shower was always warm. Our room was only a short walk from the main pool and mineral springs which was a pleasant surprise. Others will have to walk further but the grounds are so nice that the walk is like a stroll in a garden. I read some reviews that the breakfast was adequate but nothing special. I have no idea what they were talking about! To me it was a wonderful daily brunch. We stayed 4 nights and looked forward to each morning. Most food items stayed the same but how can you complain about having fresh bananas, pineapple, papaya, and watermelon, three different breads for toasting, pancakes, scrambled eggs, rice and beans, sweet plantains, lunch meat and cheese, a waffle station and made to order egg station with 6 toppings for omelets, OJ and Mango / Banana juice, and coffee to pick from? There were also two breakfast breads each day that varied and one or two different Costa Rican hot items each day that included small sausages, chicken or sausages in a creamy tomato sauce, and several types of what they called "hash"…potato based one time and green bean based another. To top it off, the restaurant has a great view of Arenal and the pool / mineral springs area and an attentive and cheerful staff. They even attached their old bananas to a nearby tree each morning to attract birds! The pool was clean and the mineral springs area very relaxing. They just added a second hot springs and bar. The grounds are filled with beautiful plants and fruit trees with a running / walking nature trail that they are just getting going. It was a bit confusing but we loved it…especially watching the intricate world of leaf cutting ants! Bottom line...you will love this place!
Great pool, amazing staff, very clean. Good location. Wifi was weak if some places, but not a big deal!
Comfortable and luxury rooms, great volcano views. Food at rhe bar a little pricey
Great location, very customer-centric, convenient to fun activities, interesting tours, and good restaurants Breakfast and coffee not available until 6:30. Activities have early start times so breakfast at least by 6 would be better
My mother using a walker was able to go everywhere on the property. The staff was wonderful and accommodating.
Resort overall was nicely, staff helpful and courteous at front and helping to rooms. Room service was fast Pools a little too hot, kids didn't like bartenders serves. I also thought it was a little slow.
The room was reasonably priced after the off-season discount of 30%. The property is well-designed, and the thermal pools are nice. Tour desk staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurants are over-priced. WiFi only in the common areas. Can be noisy if somebody is staying in the adjoining room.
Prices or food were a bit expensive...we had a car so we drove to La Fortuna
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The grounds were amazing and we loved that we had access to the National Park trails. The Jacuzzi was a nice treat after a long day of hiking. The views were breath-taking! Access to other activities was relatively easy but the roads are not great. Town was about a 30 minute drive away. Nice breakfast buffet provided free of charge! It would be nice to have screens on the front doors as well so you could have both the patio door (which had a screen) and front door open to allow a cross-breeze. The room became a bit stuffy and buggy during the day without this. Also it would be good if t pool was heated to allow swimming year round. The prices for food at the restaurant were expensive. The Happy Hour (2 for 1) would be better if they allowed for 2 different drinks vs. 2 of the same kind of drink. Finally a shuttle to town that ran even just 3 times a day would be a great perk!
We loved having so many hikes/walks to do right on the property and a very good restaurant as well. It was so nice having nature and animals outside our door each day. The staff was warm, welcoming, helpful and friendly. There were plenty of activities to do on the grounds for all ages: pool, foosball/game room, checkers, books, TVs in the main buildings and a hot tub. Be aware that the Lodge is a 20-25 minute drive from La Fortuna up a somewhat rough dirt road. If you have your own vehicle it's easy to get to and from, but without a bit more challenging. There are taxis that cost $30 each way or a shuttle 3x/day from the lodge.
Location, views and surroundings were fabulous. Staff were ultra helpful. It would have been helpful to have a small desk and chair in the room for using computer. Morning nature walk was a bit disappointing, as guide only occasionally stopped to point something out. Food was only fair.
The location is without a doubt beautiful- however you can tell the resort needs some updating. Simple things like softer lighting, modern decorations, and new furniture in common areas would truly make this place a five star hotel. That aside, the pool/bar area is beautiful, and worth spending the time at. The rooms are huge, with amazing shower/waterfall built in. Private balconies give a sense of exlcusiveness and general feeling of getting away. Only bar/snack area onsite didn't open until 6pm. The main restaurant food was not very good, which is unfortunate because it's where the free breakfast came from. We needed staff to come turn the private room jacuzzi on and off (which they did right away, so that's a perk), and again, just a general outdated feel in the main areas.
The location the rooms the pool and the restaurants were all amazing The staff was friendly and courteous. The staff was friendly and courteous. We got excellent customer service from John Carlo, Alan and Ana. it was amazing! Alex and the front desk
David and his family were great hosts. The hotel is well maintained. The rooms are clean and the pool is serviced regularly. It's a good location, about 1 mi out of the city center, but with multiple restaurants and a super market nearby. The Red Frog Coffee shop (little yellow building next door) is a great place; try the empanada. They also offer use of a communal kitchen that has the necessary cooking tools. David can also help you book taxis, tours and transfers.
Gabby, the owner was great, very friendly and always helpful. the 2 cafes in the front were excellent and we ate there everyday. It's an easy walk to the beach and restaurants. Bank with ATM is across the street. So, all in all, very convenient and good value for the money. there is a club on the other side of the the street that played very loud music on friday and saturday until at least 3pm. Sounded like it was in the hotel! Not good!
We had my Sons' wedding here and loved the setting and the pool area. Loved the wildlife that would come thru and hang around for a while. LOVED standing in the Infinity Pool and watching the sunset over the horizon. Pure beauty!!!! Wi-Fi was very poor in the rooms. Also the construction work noise in the early mornings was too noisy for a restful and peaceful vacation. We lost a pair of prescription sunglasses and asked all around if they had been found: manager told us that they had been found a returned to the owner. FALSE!!!! We found them ourselves and they were not found by staff or returned by them. Do not lying staff.
The hotel was soso the best part was the land. Costa Rica is a beautiful place on it's own. So even if the hotel is crappy & the staff (except Miguel ) it's still a nice place The staff seemed unaware of anything going on. Everyone was very confused. And they charged my card for things I didn't purchase. And the wifi was down for two days.
Exceptionally located to enjoy nature, play and have the Arenal Volcano at sight. Very good breakfast included in the price and children friendly. Wifi was not available by the pool neither in the rooms
The staff.... so sweet and accommodating Its a very rustic experience. .no AC but the window opened and it was cooler than I thought.. but no screens allowed for bugs, moths and gnats
The resort was a beautiful setting lots of greenery and a very friendly and accommodating staff. Had a plumbing problem first day but it was quickly resolved. Food was good and location was close to town but still tucked away.
The place is beautiful. The pool and hot tubs are great. When we checked in we took advantage of the special at the spa. The spa is amazing the massage was fine but the location is unbelievable, the room was open on one side facing the jungle and river I have never been to a spa before where the nature sounds were real and not played through speakers. It's the jungle do you have to expect some bugs. There were tiny ants everywhere at the resort they did not bother anything but seeing ants crawl through the room lowers the cleanliness score to 4 stars. That being said I would stay here again in a heartbeat even with the ants.
The staff are not only helpful, but also go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We arrived late after the gates were locked... and we were scared (the trip was rainy and foggy!). But the front desk staff came in the rain at midnight, unlocked the gate, showed us to our room and we made it safely. The next day we bothered her again because we had problems with the safe, but she was always happy to help, patient, and would always ask if she could help more. This was the most helpful staff we've ever had. Being near forests and waterfalls naturally makes the air very humid, even in the "dry" season. As a result, our pillows were musty (moldy?) and the sheets felt damp even though they were dry. It made sleeping a bit uncomfortable.
Cabins were large and clean. The wildlife was incredible. The Volcano is right outside your back door. We saw Toucans flying overhead daily. Howler monkees every morning. The breakfast buffet is fresh and tasty, with an omelet station. The dinner buffet prices were extremely inexpensive and the food was good. The cabin road needs some grading though. What a great place to stay! What a great view!
The bungalows here are great, especially for the price. They were extremely clean and well kept air conditioned, and were almost bug free (quite a feat for Costa Rica hotels!). The view was amazing- could not beat it. It seemed like many hotels in the region would have obstructions to the view, but since this resort is placed back 1km from the road, you really felt like you were secluded in the jungle. You could hear the howler monkeys (gave me a wake up call every morning!) and you could see the volcano from the bed. The restaurant was very good as well (we ate breakfast and lunch). Our only complaint (and it did not affect our wonderful stay) was that the beds were no less than terrible. And we are pretty easy going people about that sort of thing. But really, you could pay $200 or more per night for another hotel in the region and have less wonderful views, and whether or not the place would have as much character, privacy, cleanliness and space as this place would be questionable. ...
