Prós: staff was very friendly
Contras: everything was great but did not receive a truck with a full tank. the dial gauge on the dashboard showed the nail as full but the digital fuel gauge showed fewer miles than how I returned it. I explained this to the rental agent but he just blew me off.
More guidance would have been nice
Prós: Nice car. Worked well. Pick up and drop off were mostly smooth
Contras: I payed for a Sante Fe but got a Tuscon because I didn't immediately notice the difference. It worked out fine, but the Sante Fe is superior from what I learned.
Contras: We picked out our car, installed a car seat and packed it up. We were then told that National was going to sell the car so we needed to pick out a different one. Not what we wanted to hear after a long day of travel.

Prós: The counter personnel were well-dressed, competent, and treated me like I was their only customer.

Prós: Alamo was great. But it was my second choice, after my first choice -- some no name rental agency called Mex, selected initially via Kayak, which routed me through Rentcars.com -- was a friggin disaster. I landed at 6 pm, the time of my reservation, only to discover that the rental office was already closed. There was no one to help me, no number to call, no customer service from anyone in that chain, including Kayak.
It was a friday evening at 6. I tried 4 other rental agencies; they were either out of cars or were asking insane amounts of $$ for them. I had to get a ride from the airport, and come back the next morning to rent from Alamo. (Which was great.)
Contras: Alamo was great. Avoid Mex Rent a Car and Rentcars.com at all costs. No one picks up the phone at Mex and you can't leave a voicemail. The number for Rentcars doesn't work, and the email responses are all in Portuguese. I'm not kidding. Why Kayak continues to use these vendors is a mystery to me. Makes me reconsider my choice in travel apps.

Contras: Don’t oversell cars! If I book a pickup, giving me a dodge caravan minivan because you oversold pickup trucks isn’t providing excellent service.
Prós: Drop off was great
Contras: Have the selected class or better available. I don’t consider an infinity to be the same class as an Escalade

Prós: Staff was super friendly at both the pick up and the drop off. However, I don't appreciate the fast talking sales person trying to upsell is a shady manner. Suddenly my one way rental jumped from $70 to $130 but luckily the customer service guy on the phone and the staff at the drop off location were super helpful, understanding and accommodating.
Contras: Explain all the charges clearly and slowly and include actual pricing info instead of trying to just get the most out of every customer. People are on strict budgets these days and lack of transparency and not having the customers best interest in mind will cause you to lose business.
Contras: The car smelled of smoke, and was not clean.

Prós: Relatively quick pickup and processing, car was in good condition and performed well. Associate at the desk was professional and friendly. Car was newer model Hyundai.
Contras: First, got charged an extra fee for extending the rental that was not mentioned even though I had explicitly asked in advance. Required proof of insurance at check-in, which I've never had requested before.

Contras: The "rental car insurance" ads lead me to buy insurance while I was online reserving a car. What I didin't know -- Even with the reading of the clauses which are difficult to understand -- was that my own car insurance company would be the one I'd contact first before this one kicked in. (According to the clerk at Green Motion.) So I ended up buying the one offered by Green Motion, and wasted money on Allianz.

The live agent printed a receipt from another customer, potentially revealing some personal information. This took a while to resolve before I was able to retrieve the receipt of my reservation.
Although it is 2020, not all cars were equipped with Apple CarPlay so have to check carefully before leaving the lot.
Overall my pick up was delayed by 1h due to the above issues.

Prós: That location was massively understaffed. I went in for my rental at 2, but didn’t leave until 3. The poor staff was extremely professional, but clearly very stressed out. The first car they gave me kept telling me there was no “key” in the car, and I could not track a single employee down to help me. Eventually, they swapped the car out, but I ended up missing my appointment due to the hour delay.
Prós: The rate. The first office counter experience. The car.
Contras: The car had an almost empty fuel tank. We reported this at the check-out counter and the representative seemed to enter this information into their system. I verbally confirmed that we need to bring the car with an almost empty fuel tank. Upon return, the tank had around 2 more gallons than at checkout. The receiving representatives were unfriendly and moreover they charged a $50+ fuel service fee without notifying me. Thankfully, I checked the receipt. I was told to go to the booth in the garage. The representative in the booth started with suggesting that I'm mistaken and the tank was most probably full. Thankfully again, I had taken the picture of the dashboard at the pick-up and showed it to them. I was planning to let go of the extra gasoline we had in the tank, but the bad attitude and unfriendly manner of the representatives so far made me upset and I demanded a reimbursement. Thankfully they were reasonable enough for refund and reimbursement. In short, a better check-out-in system and friendly and customer-oriented representatives can help a lot here.

So I had to rebook - from Budget directly - at a cost $150 more than the original, promised offer. HORRIBLE EXPErIENCE.

Contras: I’m so angry, I will never ever rent from budget again. The whole thing cost me more than twice the quoted price because they slapped me with all these bullshit insurance charges that the website made it seem like we’re included. I’m only using less shady companies from now on.

Contras: Check-in was painfully slow. I had to use the video check-in terminal with a remote agent. I was talked into a so called upgrade that I later regretted. The Dodge Journey was sold to me as an SUV, which wasn’t true but they had no other vehicles available in my class. Vehicle was underpowered and not what I needed. Last time with Thrifty, me thinks.

Never was I shown a brochure saying what I was signing for was $68 in fuel and $30 in taxes and surcharges. I returned the vehicle with a full tank and 16 miles on the odometer since fuel up. I clarified with the rep that I would only be charged for the top off at $3.82 a gallon. I never would have signed had the full, true details been told to me. Customer service is no help at all.

They said they didn’t charge me but on my bank statement I was charged
Contras: I was charged 3 times the original stipulated amount on the website. Was scammed but could not change the booking as it was last minute.

The Dodge Journey was sold to me as an SUV, which wasn’t true but they had no other vehicles available in my class. Vehicle was underpowered and not what I needed. Last time with Thrifty, me thinks.

The Van Nuys drop off was a disaster - the guy was not present, he finally returned my v/m after I waited more than 20 minutes, told me to leave the keys with another company and I was charged another full day although the vehicle was returned on time. I only found out about the extra charges because of my credit card statement.

Contras: Rental return in San Francisco is not in the rental return building and I was directed to a non existent location 20 minutes away in Burlingame only to find out that the real drop off was at an almost unfindable location on south canal. When I finally did arrive no one was being helped. 2 employees said they were short staffed. It took me a full hour to drop off my car

Contras: The car was dirty. Arrived at the rental place and had to wait while they "cleaned the car" even though I had a reservation. They must have just hosed it down even though it took 20 minutes. The dashboard was covered in dust, there was white residue on the seats, a whole slice of pizza in full view stuck down beside the seat, and pepperoni and cheese in multiple places through the car.
Prós: Flight cancelled by Jet Blue. Could not re-schedule. Never picked up car/

And we are standing at the desk when they told us this. Never been asked for that ever before, not even when renting a car in France. And we did not have a copy. Scrambling to call our insurance company and having to have them email this to us was a pain. A requirement like this should be in large red letters all over the booking and was not.
Also the car was pretty worn out, but got us there.

They also told me that if we needed to be picked up they couldn’t do it because we had a family of 5 and they could only take up to 4 people. So stayed that we had to find a ride to the airport ourselves or just drive it back in the condition it was in. They also told me that even though we had a bad situation happen if our car was not back on time we would get charged for it being late and entire extra day. We also we supposed to get a gull size car and we did not get that. Very disappointed and will not rent from them again!!!!

Contras: it sure would have been nice to get the car i reserved (Toyota RAV4) or Better instead of the POS Mitsubishi Outlander (Sport(!) no less!!) i got for my family of four. poor comfort, lousy handling, acceleration, fit AND finish. an otherwise outstanding two week trip ended up be a series of non stop jokes over what a lousy vehicle we had.

Contras: I did not want a sports utility vehicle oh, but that was all they had. The Hyundai Santa Fe has horrible blind spot on the passenger side and it smelled like cigarettes, so I wasn't really very enthusiastic about driving it

That is a complete rip-off. I will never use them again!!!!

She started to get angry with me when I refused and kept saying, “you’ve got coverage with them but I don’t think you know about 3rd person coverage. You look like you don’t even know. Pull out the email they sent you!” So loud that the people behind me could hear her. We all just stopped and stared at her and I finally asked if I could have my car so I could leave. She was angry at me that she couldn’t hustle the up sell out of me and just stared at me for another 2 minutes like I spit in her cereal or something. IT WAS WEIRD. I won’t be going with FOX Rentals again strictly because of her. That was a horrible experience.

Frustrated!!!!
Prós: They finally gave us a free double upgrade
Contras: The first three cars we ere offered were either dirty or had a cosmetic problem (a license plate that was falling off).
Dropping the car off was very confusing with little assistance because a lack of personnel.
Would not rent from them again.

Prós: We booked the reservation online that stated in bold, Unlimited Miles. We were traveling from San Diego to Phoenix. Unfortunately, unlimited does not mean unlimited. Our rental price would have doubled due to a fee per mile after 150 miles. We chose not to go through with the rental as a result, which was extremely disappointing.
This survey is also frustrating because I can't adjust the rating for each category. Overall, it was a poor experience.

Contras: The company advertises unlimited mileage, however the rentals have major mileage restrictions. Rentals can only be driven locally and the rate is $.99/mile after 200 miles.

Over-priced and dishonest
Contras: Pacific charged me twice as much as they estimated on Kayak. If that had been the extent of it, I may have left it alone. The day after I returned my car, however, the manager called to tell me that there is a "new scratch" on the front bumper. The car they rented to me was already scratched up, so I assumed he had gotten something confused and I could simply send the pictures I had snapped of the car before driving away from the lot. He sent me pictures of a car I'm not convinced is the car I rented, with a big scratch in the bumper, and asked that I have my lawyer call him. I have never felt so mistreated by a company. I'm certain that I had nothing to do with a scratch in the car I rented, and after consulting Yelp I noticed that Pacific has pulled this same stunt with at least one other customer. Do yourself a favor and stay far away.

Didn't like that I had to catch a bus from the airport, a rental car center, then take another van to their rental place- added another layer of traveling around and loading/ unloading.

Contras: Firstly they charged me additional $30 to add another driver. In addition the car sucked. They said ford fusion or similar so I wanted to rent Fusion but there is no choice. They did not even have the Fusion. Every car is too old.

Contras: When we got to the place we were being helped by a woman and she was going through all the information and everything was fine. then about 2 min in another man comes out and says "this is only for local, this is only for local." we were like ok and kept going. then the man starts to talk over the lady that is helping us and eventually kicks the lady off of the computer and takes over. The man ask if all I have is a debit card and I tell him yes. He then says there is a $600 deposit. Let me say that again a 2-day rental at $38 and he wanted a $600 deposit. Now my mom who was with me used to work at Hertz car rental down the street and knows the industry. I am in school studying to be a lawyer. I asked the man to show me ANYWHERE ON MY CONFIRMATION EMAIL OR ANY LINK WHERE THERE IS A $600 DEPOSIT. He could not show me anything anywhere. I hold his company Pacific and your company as well responsible for doing business with a company of this sorts. I hope that my treatment was not because of my skin color, but I still do not know why this man had to insert himself into my transaction in the first place, and he could not show me anything in writing in regards to a $600 deposit.

The cars are older and the one I drove sounded like it had transmission problems. The engine light went on half-way through the week. They told me that I could either keep driving it or bring it back and trade vehicles.Luckily the car didn't break down before I brought it back.

Contras: I was given a final total of charges with my online reservation that was almost $90 lower than the actual charges. MANY customers in the line in front of me left angry and frustrated. I was very frustrated myself. Other companies have similar fees, but state them up front when reserving online. Payless hides these charges so the "total" I'm given online is not even close to what I'm actually expected to pay. I'll never rent from them again because of this.
The car was fine, but had manual windows and door locks. I've never rented a car with manual door locks, even in the lowest price tier, and my rental with Payless was in the 3rd price tier. I expected a better car for the money I paid. I will not rent from Payless again.
Prós: They use the world’s worst car, a Mitsubishi Mirage, to get you to upgrade to a better car at a price no better than their competitors.
Contras: The upgrade car was banged up, displayed many warning lights throughout the trip, and had a dim drivers side headlight that was inexplicably full of water. The car is in need of repair and never should have been rented out.
Contras: I was informed at pickup time that the vehicle couldn’t be driven out of California. I had to make alternate arrangements quickly at a time when I was under a time crunch and a lot of stress.

I had to rent from another company for one day (extra $ out of pocket) and come back the next day to pick up the car for the remainder of my 2 day rental. The associate told me he couldn’t reopen and that he’d create a new reservation for another $50. I got upset and told him that I wanted the car that I already paid for for the one additional day and that I refused to pay anything additional, since I had already paid for two days. He became defensive and rude and eventually opened up my original reservation and gave me the car I already paid for. Why couldn’t he do that from the start? Why did it have to escalate and have to exchange words? I’ve rented from other places and they will help you find solutions rather than trying to get more money out of you. There was no customer service etiquette or empathy for the situation, but was met with defensive remarks and anger for telling him that I wouldn’t pay more money for a reservation I already had due to them closing before my plane got in.
Prós: When I needed to exchange my vehicle due to a minor mechanical issue, it was fast and simple.
Contras: When I arrived to pick up my vehicle there was no one in sight. When I finally found someone there was no greeting of any kind. But the agent was very rude handed me the keys and she walked out to continue her smoking, but did not direct me to the location of the vehicle. I had to read the signs to findout where their vehicles were parked and started walking down the aisle and hitting the alarm button to see which van would beep. And viola I found my rental. Horrible service when I picked up my rental but the agent I worked with when exchanging my vehicle was excellent.

We were overcharged since they didn't credit the prepayment and had to bring it to their attention at check out. They billed us an additional charge that showed up on or card with no explanation.
Contras: The agent at the counter lied to us and told us the insurance was required in California. Then when I questioned him bc the screen I had to initial said it was optional, he moved me to the next screen on his own so I could not read it anymore. He then tried to back track and say the conversation was recorded so I needed to confirm that I understood what he meant.
The first rental we got was old, not comparable to the car promised to us at booking and the alarm went off every time we opened the car door. We had to go back and return the vehicle for a different one.
Never again will I rent from them.

Then I hear them telling the person next to me that they did have compact cars (after they told me they didn’t). I canceled my reservation on the spot and went next door. When I arrived, the staff stated it was a 150 mile limit per day and I was not allowed to travel any further than LA from San Diego. If this were the case, I would have never made the reservation. This issue caused extreme issues both in projected cost and significant delay. The staff stated this was a special COVID rule. COVID has been around for 10 months. It was no new surprise and could have been communicated.
Contras: Simply stating that this was NOT unlimited miles and had a maximum radius distance would have avoided this.
Prós: NO they were not friendly, they were only mindless drones working for a paycheck.
Contras: Just go somewhere else, unless you want to empty your wallet.

Contras: I couldn't rent a car because they do not allow debit cards for deposit. That's why I spent money for the car I booked with kayak and just wasted money!!

Contras: When calling to order shuttle from airport the line rang busy and never answered, made to purchase additional insurance that doubled the final price (was originally showing as $66 for 4 days)
Prós: The staff was not very helpful, they were constantly trying to sell me even after repeatedly denying any additional coverage.
Contras: I ultimately returned the vertigo and went with another vendor. I've rented many vehicles and this reminded me of renting a vehicle in a third world country.

Contras: I tried to see if it was possible to cancel because I was experiencing Covid symptoms, so I wad advised to stay home and quarantine. I had to cancel my flight as well. I did leave a voicemail about 2 days before the trip but it went straight to a VM. 3 days Later, I have yet to recieve a phone call. I would much rather have chosen a more well known Rental like Dollar, Budget, Avis ..etc, and pay a couple dollars more, and have a live agent answer the phone or return my call at the least, within a reasonable time frame.
Prós: pick up and drop off was easy and fast, the drivers were pleasant and helpful. Great great price and the employee who took care of me was very nice.

Contras: There was no prior notification that local rentals needed additional proof of residence , like utility bills. I could not pick up my vehicle and I found out at the time I arrived at the counter
Contras: The rental company was fine, the booking website was terrible. Didn’t get the mileage restrictions and didn’t allow a smooth cancellation.
Contras: Had planned on attending a funeral in San Diego but was moved to July. Was not allowed a refund. What a rip off.
