A small intimate village pub with good food and atmosphere which included accomodation. It answered our requirements for the night Bedrooms/ensuit facilities need a major modernisation.
Service, welcome food all good points No bad points only that we couldn't stay longer
Wonderful traditional pub in stunning surroundings. Even the picnic benches outside had pots of flowers on them! Bedrooms slightly faded in places. No phone in room and no signal for mobile but hotel kind enough to let me make an essential call on their landline. Hotel had not received reservation for evening meal from Active Hotels.
The warm welcome and helpful attitude of all the staff N/A
Staff , location , property olde worlde Water pressure in shower was very poor,
Staff were very helpful. Breakfast was excellent. Bar sold a number of real ales. Twin beds were not as comfortable as they could have been.
The olde world charm of the pub and the attached dining room provides a super atmosphere for a drink and a meal. Selection of real ales complements a varied food menu. Log fires during our autumnal visit completed the cosy feeling The toilet facilities in the public house are wholly inadequate for the number of people that use this venue.
Very friendly staff and good food.
The pub is wonderful and the standard of food very high. The village of Frampton Mansell is a lovey setting. There was only one bad point: the bed. It was a queen size bed, I think, and rather uncomfortable for us both. We are not exceptionally tall (5'8'' and 5'9'') - but it seemed a rather short bed!!
Beautiful location and nice food!
Excellent food. Capable, efficient, polite staff. Room was not great (dated bathroom; only an over basin light & no bath which was contrary to description at time of booking).
Very friendly owners/staff, and good food. Hand-held shower only in the room I stayed in.
Relaxed country atmosphere, nice location, staff tries hard, Our room, a standard, was tiny but others are lovely and will will go again choosing a higher rated room.
Quaint A little cold
Excellent restaurant. Beautiful room Staff were pretty non-commital on arrival. Not made to feel particularly welcome.
close to my destination. Food was nice. Idiosyncratic atmosphere maintenance of hotel could be improved. - Loo seat was loose, TV remote was not for TV in room. No heating in bathroom, and window would not close Staff could be more responsive to requirements - restaurant booking for 7:00pm, food not delivered until 7:40
Breakfasts were excellent. The hotel was sited in a very quiet and piucturesque area. Restaurant food was overpriced in our opinion.
The hotel had charm and character and the food was very good the room was too warm and I didn't want to leave the window open as it was not secure
The Bear is a lovely hotel in a great position on the National Trust area of Rodborough Common. The room was excellent and very comfortable in the old part of the building. The staff are very friendly and polite. We stayed here on our way to a holiday in the South West and it was an extremely good place to pick. We were in a room on the front of the hotel but slept very soundly. We would definitely stay at this hotel again and would recommend it.
Good food, excellent wine choice. Friendly helpful staff. Room not ready at designated time. Bed far too soft
General overall comfort and "rustic" atmosphere, excellent country position. The standard of training of some of the (obviously new) staff needs to improve
We had great difficulty in booking a table for dinner. Restaurant was full. We did achieve an early sitting and found our meal very disappointing.
staff friendliness the force of the shower in the bathroom
Friendly atmosphere in delightful surroundings. Nice room. Very satisfying experience
Stunning location, interesting historical building. very powerful shower! Good breakfast with lots of choice. I met 2 very helpful members of staff, the receptionist and general manager which helped to redeem the place in regards to their calibre of staff. Double room as small as a single and was tired and shabby, esp the bathroom. The girl receptionist was very helpful and nice as was the general manager on duty but other staff I met were quite unhelpful and struggled to understand me (I speak the Queens English....) if you asked a question they would speak in their own language between themselves and not make it clear whether or not you will be getting a response. Menu choices didnt make it as far as the plate, you get what you're given, thus makes me wonder why they ask you what you want to begin with. I experienced issues with the fluctuating wifi connection but the staff helped to rectify this. Do not bother with the fixed price bar menu unless you're happy with very small portions.
A superb location with easy access to countryside walks .Quiet and restful with little passing traffic and excellent views. . No guarantee for residents to enjoy meal in main restaurant. Little urgency when we reported that our room on 3rd floor did not have any hot water.
the cleanliness of the hotel and it was quiet and peaceful the only issue we found was the bar isn't open for serving alchoholic drinks after midnight and there isn't room service
Very clean and modern rooms. Food good but restaurant small especially when you have a coach trip staying who fill up the restaurant. Would stay there again. On booking I requested a room not above 2nd floor but was allocated a 4th floor room. This was changed but if they had read my instructions should not have happened.
Brand new hotel, ideal for what we wanted None
Sp0tless Communal check in bar and resturant multi purpose area not satisfactory
Comfortable rooms and good service.
Spacious, clean and comfortable room A room with a double bed should have two easy chairs (there's plenty of room for two). If you only drink tea and have one last thing at night you cannot have one first thing in the morning..not enough tea bags... or sugar is provided, and a tray to stand it all on would be a nice touch. Even a small plastic one like they have on airlines. Considering we booked the room around February it was disappointing to have a room with such a rotten outlook. It felt as if we had been 'shoehorned' into the hotel at the last minute. a view of the park across the road would have been preferable to the blank wall, made out of 'cages' of rocks, with it's attendant fag-ends and discarded soft-drink bottles which had been thrown up onto it, presumably by some members of staff taking breaks outside the back door!
Rats in the car park by the front door of the hotel make me think that there is a problem.
Friendly staff Room not up to normal standard
Good location near to town
We have used this hotel on several occasions because when we visit family in the Stroud area it is convenient, the food is excellent value for money and the rooms are always clean and roomy. The staff are always very pleasant/helpful. On our second night we were awoken by the carpets being cleaned in the early hours of the morning. However. after complaining we were not charged for this nights accommodation.
cleanliness and friendly staff value for money in the location
The staff were very helpful and friendly. My sister and I found it provided what we needed for an overnight stay visiting our bother. I booked via the internet and was unable to state that we wanted twin beds rather than a double bed. The staff were cooperative in offering to change the bed to 2 singles but when we saw how big the bed was we decided it wasn't necessary. Breakfast was excellent.
Friendly check in staff. Restaurant available on site. Clean, comfortable room Room on first floor accessed via stairs and several fire doors. Not easy with several bags. There were however rooms on the ground floor, for people with mobility problems
Warm, Clean, Comfortable bed. Only disappointment was that this hotel didn't accept my Emerald Discount Card, and I had to pay the full £55 for the night. Snow fell overnight, and the slope to the car park wasn't salted/gritted.
Great place for a weekend break.
Nice room in a nice hotel in a nice location, with lots of individual and unusual features - the mill wheel, the large rabbit statue, the ourside area by the water etc. The bar being the reception was awkward, because when we checked in there was a wedding party going on, so it felt like we were intruding. Also the breakfast area was a bit canteen like - inside anyway - and didn't have the individuality of the bedroom and other parts of the hotel.
Stunning location, really quirky place with interesting features. The food in the restaurant was delicious, really good home cooked meals.
The Hotel provided exactly what we needed for a mini break away from our work and daily environment. The setting was wonderful, enjoying a meal and drink by the side of the pond, the saftt were brilliant and they made our holiday. Theonly change I would suggest is to extend the restaurant menu - ok for a 3 day break, but seemed a little limited.
The overall weekend was very relaxing, our needs were met with comfort and lovely food. Very organised and efficient. Lovely surroundings and interiors. The shower pressure was not adequate and needed a call to reception to find out how to correct this, a note in the shower would have been better. Also a lamp in our room (No8) would have been a nicer form of lighting as everything was concentrated over the bed area only.
Great price, great food
Lovely room, clean, all facilities that you would need (tea/coffee, hair dryer etc). Like the fact the TV had an idoc built in and there was free wifi. N/A
the staff were delightful and the food very fresh-lovely fresh fruit at breakfast and delicious cooked food at breakfast time. Fish at dinner very well presented and tasty. Vegetables uninspiring and overcooked we were shown first to a horrible room-dark damp smelling, we complained and then had quite a nice room, tho the sound does travel from other rooms. don`t like the radio in the dining room
We had a couple of very nice meals within the restaurant. I feel sure that we did not get a superior room which we paid for, we overheard that all superior rooms are upstairs within main hotel and our room was tired and in need of some work.
The breakfast was good and the staff were obliging. The hotel was fine for a one night stay and the family room was fairly commodious. It wasn't comfortable enough for a longer stay. There seemed to be a lot of empty spaces downstairs with obvious potential for refurbishment.
The staff were very helpful and utterly charming. The restaurant offer Thai food which was very good.
Friendly, helpful staff. Lovely restaurant and bar. A very clean and comfortable room and excellent value for money.
Excellent food & size of room The room was to hot and we could not turn the heating off
Staff were very responsive - room lacked a few basics (telephone, hooks on bathroom door, too little towel rail space, nowhere to put toileteries in bathroom, no waste-bin in bedroom)However, thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
both of us just have a excellent time well done
easy parking freindly staff nice bar had a continental feel to it, our room had been refurbished and was excellent breakfast was good but served on cold plates resulting in a not so hot breakfast also a bit noisy late at night, weekends only i assume, due to weatherspoons pub letting out and taxi office next door
After a four hour train journey straight after a full days work the position of the hotel was a welcome site!
Central for Stroud Room was cold and very noisy during the night from ventilation fans
Distance travel, not to far from home, central to shops and restaurants. As there was no double glazing on windows it was very noisey from surroundings areas.
There was not one thing that was good! Would like my money back as worst hotel we have been to in the uk. Even rang them yesterday and got nowere....
lovely large room no
Quiet, discreet, clean, easy good car park, hotel not in town center no fast food or possiblilty to eat a meal, but good breakfast
Rooms were comfortable, clean, with nice ensuite. Bed was lovely. Breakfast was not good, too little room for too many people, staff had problems keeping up with demand, so jugs, food containers etc were empty. No real tea or coffee just out of a machine. Just sausage and scrambled eggs which did not taste nice. Fruit juice out of a machine which had an aftertaste.
Easy and with a family of 5 plus dog it's hard to find somewhere that works - we had adjoining rooms. It was handy from the motorway and did the job. Overnight motel.
Pleasantly laid out; clean and tidy; cheerful staff. Pleasant decor in the room and attractive/practical shower room. Simple but good value breakfast. Poor lighting in the room (300) . There appeared to be an intermittent electrical fault in one light fitting which we mentioned, was apparently dealt with, but wasn't resolved.
the room we were given was covered in urine stains form an occupant having had a dog in there we counted approx 16 large stains and the room smelled
Clean and bright environment No lager on tap on night I stayed, and excessive price of bottled beer.
We arrived at 11.30 and the staff allowed us to book in nearly as we wished to go into town. Throughout our visit they were friendly and helpful. The service was excellent. The decor in the rooms was a little dated and our friends found a hair in the bath.
lovely hotel and location exceptional staff and very clean very uncomfortable bed
Location, close to Gloucester but in the country Decor was tired
the situation, the room was very good value for money the high cost added on for a full english breakfast and dinner
Cleanliness, great value. Good location comfortable Noisy due to vehicles arriving at front door during the night/early mornig
whirlpool bath, excellent food and service
Location, decoration and reception. The mattress was a little too firm for me, but fine for my wife. £21 for two breakfasts was a little bit expensive.
General ambience and surroundings
Easy access to motorway used as stop off point hotel clean with friendly staff good room in rear extension Trail bike racing in adjacent field for 1-2 hrs late afternoon(sunday) not mentioned !!!
Great setting with excellent views. Loved the rooms whilst small had atmosphere with beams & good facilities/decor Poor service at breakfast, slow & orders missed
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Also to be upgraded without any additional charge is always a bonus. I felt the prices for wine were a little steep.
food and accomdation was excellent - great value wekend break perhaps only small thing was to have better pilllows
As above - price of drinks
It was clean, comfortable and relaxing. A place to recharge the batteries. I have no negative comments to make.
It was good value, especailly at teh discount rate.Breakfast staff were very friendly. Two lifts, one broken, other only held3
Good breakfast Toilet seat was broken in our room, it was just sitting unattached on top of the toilet. Long (human!) hairs on the bed cover
The breakfasts were superb, very wide choice and all excellent quality. The evening dinners were very poor, only a limited menu which is only changed about every 3 months and the quality was not good at all. Difficult to believe that the same kitchens prepared breakfast (see above) and dinner.
Clean well appoinred rooms. Pleasant view over Cooper's Hill. Excellent breakfast.
Modern, clean, large sized room with all facilities including fridge (with fresh milk!), tea-maker, etc. Comfortable, king sized bed, air conditioning and all usual bathroom requisites. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. Set in own grounds with ample car parking. Semi rural location on scenic A46 to Bath and within short driving distance from Cheltenham & Gloucester. Also within reasonable distance from Tetbury (i.e. Highgrove & Westonbiirt Arboretum) & Stroud.
THe hotel and location
The Breakfast was good The Hotel was very old and in major need of renovation. It currently has an 80's feel to it. The leisure club, was old with run down facilities. The prices were doubled for the Cheltenham festival which was unfair.
We had a problem with the other guests (rugby team) and the staff were brilliant about it, we had to check out early, but there was no fee or problem just very apologetic staff Dated bathroom decor
Staff friendly You had to go outside the main building to a separate one for the bar and restaurant. There was no proper lift in the hotel.(some very odd, folded lift contraptions by the side of some of the stairs.)There was only a carvery menu in the evening and the fish I ate there was tasteless (no fried fish just boiled cod.) There was very poor lighting in the bedrooms.Generally, the hotel had a very seventies,old-fashioned feel to it.
The dining room was too cold to sit comfortably.
not a lot...depressing place depressing, old fashioned, unfriendly staff who looked at you as if you had 2 heads if you asked them a question
The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The breakfasts were very nice.
Hotel very tired overall- updating work is mentioned when you book, but price doesn't reflect this enough.
leisure facilities restricted food menu at lunch time
The reception staff were wonderful. The "bar" closed at 23 15. With it then taking the night portaging team 45 mins to fetch a soda water and orange cordial. The gym closed too early and opened too late, as did the swimming pool. The foyer smelled of faeces, and everywhere else smelled of stale cigarette smoke.
The staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble for them. They were friendly and extremely polite
very comfortable and welcoming. breakfast very good. good value for money
Lovely location, friendly staff.
The comfort of the room, and the fixtures & fittings of a high spec.
no bar available, pool and hot tub not available, both due to wedding but not advised at time of booking and hard luck attitude by staff
Friendly, willing staff. Informality.......to the extent of no-one on reception(!), despite agreement by email. Good basic fare. Bedding too soft. No bath - though did not specify this on booking. Shower did not work. The extensive facilities not open in the evening.
This was excellent and the standard was as we intended for 'business trip rather than a luxury weekend. We were very comfortable and the breakfast was great with everything we could possibly want for choice.
Friendly and efficient staff and warm comfortable and tastefully furnished room. Could have done with a re-clean - perhaps the room had not been used recently. Cobwebs and spiders in bathroom and bedroom floor gritty.
I thought the dark barn lodge had excellent facilities. I was very impressed with the standardr of the rooms, and it was exceptional value for money
Fantastic spot and the staff could not have been more friendly or accommodating
there was NO hot water for showering and bathing in the morning what water was there was cold, which spoiled our stay.
Helpful friendly staff
Excellent staff made up for other shortcomings.
Loved the location, friendly staff and atmosphere. Would certainly stay here again if opportunity arose.
Excellent surroundings and room. The room smelled of disinfectant.
I liked the fact that the staff were so helpful. The location was great at it was in very beautiful surroundings with close links to Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Cheltenham. We loved looking at the abbeys and cathedrals. It was a very beautiful building from the outside with wonderful gardens and grounds but too many of the original features on the inside of the building have been removed. This has made it loose its authenticity and charm.
staff were very helpful,
The view from our window was, air conditioning boxes and had a constant whirring of pumps, not a £110 per night view!
The food and bar/ restaurant service
Reception staff very helpful. Lovely little restaurant. Function room ideal. Lovely small hotel with seats on the front lawns to sit in the sun. Staff were very nice. No leisure facilities but knew that when I booked. At breakfast it was cumbersome to take all the lids of the hot trays of food whilst carrying your plate and holding the tongs - putting the food under a hot plate without having to have lids would have been better
