I stayed at the Puri for two nights during a research trip. I stayed in a standard twin and was surprised by how poor the room quality was. The room was tiny, had no sense of style or charm (strange, considering it is a historical boutique hotel), there were ants on the bed, and between the twin beds was filthy and had not been swept for ages. The room and bathroom felt like a backpacker place in Delhi, not like a charming boutique hotel in Melaka. I have stayed at the Puri many times over the year, starting in 1997 and find the quality of standard rooms has declined. The positive points are that the location is excellent. The Puri is right in the heart of the old town and just a block away from restaurants and shops. The lobby of the Puri is pretty and historical, although they are allowing signs and clutter that make it much less elegant than it was.
Prós: the location and the lobby
Contras: the room was too small, had no charm or style and was not clean
Prós: Though the hotel looks aged, the rooms were adequately spacious and clean. It was also relatively quiet even though my room faces the city. The breakfast spread was good and catered to both young and old. The staff was also very friendly and helpful.
Contras: It would be great if there are shopping and entertainment facilities right in the hotel building, like Hatten Hotel.
